Schwinn hired Rae to hand paint their newly re-released retro Sting-Ray bike for Pride 2022. Rae utilized the colors of the trans flag, blue, pink, and white, to celebrate and draw attention to the transgender and nonbinary community.
Messages on the bike include “Trans Is Beautiful” and “Trans Powered”. Blue and pink flowers, along with green foliage cluster and float on the bike’s surface to represent the beauty, complexity, and fluidity of the transgender community.
Rae was hired by Netflix for a special collaboration with GLAAD called “First Time I Saw Me: Trans Voices”. Rae had just 45 minutes to paint each subject, while they were being interviewed on the other side of a large curtain.
Prior to this project, Rae had never painted in such intense time constraints. However, it has become a staple of what Rae offers when he travels with his art. In-person or “live painting” event portraits are an invigorating creative process that people can watch and ask questions during as they observe the artwork taking place.
